Current research projects:

Vinay Dabholkar is working jointly with Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan of IIM Bangalore on following two research projects under the broad theme of “systematic innovation in India”.  Prof. Krishnan is an authority on innovation ecosystem especially at a national level and has recently published an excellent book titled “From Jugaad to systematic innovation”. A brief outline of the two projects is given below.

1. Best practices in management of innovation in the Indian industry

This project explores the question “How do Indian innovative companies manage innovation?” The focus is on the process of innovation. We are studying organizations across various sectors such as FMCG, automobiles, IT, Telecom, Banking, Retail etc. In the first phase we will identify innovative companies based on awards, expert opinion, media reports and market performance. Second phase will consist of secondary research with a focus on understanding management practices for innovation. Third phase will involve detailed case studies and in the fourth phase we will draw conclusions in the form of models and best practices.

2. The public innovations that changed India: Characteristics and trajectories

The objective of this project is to identify the common characteristics of successful public and social innovations in India since Independence. By characteristics, we include issues such as the source of the idea, the time period taken for acceptance/impact, idea champions, process of acceptance, stakeholders playing key roles, etc.
